US President Joe Biden is set to face his predecessor Donald Trump in the US Presidential Election 2024 this November. With both the respective stalwarts clinching the nominations of their respective parties, the poll pundits are excited for the election day. It is not the first time when two presidential nominees have faced each other twice on Election Day.
US Presidential Election: Dwight David Eisenhower vs Adlai Stevenson (1952, 1956)
In 1952, then US president Harry S Truman decided not to run for the elections. The Democrats then nominated Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson in the election held amid the rising Cold War tensions between the US and then Soviet Union. Stevenson was pitted against Republican Party’s Dwight David Eisenhower, who had served as the Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during the Second World War.
According to the website 270toWin, Eisenhower won a landslide victory by securing 442 popular votes against Stevenson’s 89. His victory ended Democrats’ 20-year long domination on the White House.
The 1956 presidential elections witnessed a rematch of the electoral contest that took place four years ago. Eisenhower decided to run again and the opponent was the same: Adlai Stevenson. The then sitting US president emerged victorious again by clinching 457 popular votes against the Democrat rival’s 73, reported 270toWin.
What happened in Trump vs Biden contest in 2020?
The year 2020 witnessed US presidential contest amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The then US president Donald Trump had decided to run for the White House again. Joe Biden, who served as the vice president under Barack Obama, was the Democrat challenger. In the election held that year, he defeated Trump by winning 306 popular votes against Trump’s 232. High drama ensued after the election results were declared with Trump refusing to concede. His defiant stand on the poll results culminated in the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021 when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol.
A day later, Trump finally conceded the election, saying, “My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power.”
