Maharani Season 3 review: Huma Qureshi-starrer political drama is an edge of seat thriller

2 min read

Serving jail sentence over allegation of murdering her husband Bhima Bharti, Rani (Huma Qureshi) is busy making halwa for the inmates when Bihar chief minister Naveen Kumar (Amit Sial) arrives at the scene. As seen in the show’s trailer, he jabs at the beleaguered politician that she can complete her graduation and even a PhD because her stint in the jail could be anywhere between 15-20 years. Rani refuses let the barb pass by, and utters a comeback that sets the tone for the third instalment of this political thriller ‘Maharani’.

When Maharani first streamed on Sony LIV three years ago, fans and critics were quick to point out that the Subhash Kapoor creation was inspired by the political events that unfolded in Bihar then in late 90s. Rani Bharti, a doting housewife of on-screen chief minister Bhima Bharti, takes care of the couple’s three children in a remote Bihar village. She is miles away from the political powerplay that takes place in Patna. But sudden turn of events lead to Rani step out of the kitchen and take over reins of the state as chief minister. The first season saw Huma’s character toil hard to carve a place for herself in Bihar’s politics dominated by men.

Two seasons later, Rani is a shrewd politician who would not let anyone get the better of her just because of her gender. I will not reveal the spoilers, rather let you watch this show from episode 1, where the season two ended.

Why should you watch Maharani Season 3?

Firstly, it is none other than Huma Qureshi. The Delhi-born actor aces her Bihari accent like a pro. Right from her getup to mannerisms, Huma is spot on as Rani Bharti aka whoever you want to compare to. We are not going to mention name. Her performance deserves accolades. The OTT show delves on the prohibition (ban on alcohol) in Bihar, which gives rise to black marketing and smuggling of liquor in the state.

Thirdly, if you have a keen interest in politics and current affairs, watching the show will make you recall some key events that took place in the state. Even if you are not a political buff, Maharani Season 3 guarantees total entertainment.
